Cybercrime Rising During Coronavirus Pandemic

Currently, the entire world is in a panic due to the fast-spreading coronavirus disease. On the same side, the cybercriminals are taking advantage of this situation to execute significant cyberattacks. Recent news stated how the president of the European Commission warned the public to take security measures in reply to the increased cybercrime due to the coronavirus outbreak. As per now, cybercriminals are mainly attacking the health organizations which are involved in battling against COVID-19. Most recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO), coronavirus testing lab got struck by the cyberattack. WHO has reportedly seen attempted cyberattacks got doubled since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis. One of its recent allegedly attempted cyberattacks took place by a hacker group named as Darkhotel. Following the coronavirus pandemic, Cyble Research Unit (CRU) had already detected the ongoing coronavirus phishing attacks on 20 February 2020.

As most of the healthcare organizations still battling against the COVID-19 pandemic, they are also facing major cybersecurity threats from malicious actors looking to take advantage of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Along with it, recently a UK-based medical facility that is in the process to test coronavirus vaccines, Hammersmith Medicines Research has been hit by a cyberattack from one of the ransomware groups that pledged not to target medical organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the motive to monitor these security data breaches and ransomware attacks, Cyble holds the largest data breach and darkweb monitoring search engine, which contains over 30 billion dark web records.
